Go north toward the town of Ocean Shores. Return to the two-lane Ocean Shores Boulevard at the jetty. Walk around the plant fence to gain access to the Game Range. Continue east, and park near the sewage treatment plant. In Ocean Shores, go west to Ocean Shores Boulevard, and then south to the parking area at the jetty. Pick up Route 109 and then Route 115 to Ocean Shores. Join Route 101 in Aberdeen and drive west to Hoquiam. Stay on Route 8 to Route 12 (west), following signs to Aberdeen and Hoquiam. The nearby Scot's broom has been a reliable place for wintering Palm Warbler.įrom I-5, exit at #104 and take Route 101 west to Route 8. The marina at the base of Damon Point hosts grebe, cormorant, and loon. Buff-breasted Sandpiper may be in the areas surrounding the Damon Point Pond (fall). Damon Point's expansive open areas should be checked for Horned Lark, American Pipit, and Lapland Longspur (fall). The Game Range is a good place to search for shorebirds including Pacific and American Golden-Plover, Marbled Godwit, Whimbrel, dowitchers, Baird's, and Pectoral Sandpiper in the Salicornia marsh. Views from the jetty may produce cormorants, alcids, passing loons, Sooty Shearwaters (fall), and the occasional pelagic species. The Point Brown Jetty hosts Black Turnstone, Surfbird, Wandering Tattler, and Rock Sandpiper (in season). Birding at Ocean Shores is good any time of year but fall (late July to early October) can be particularly interesting when migrating shorebirds pass through. Its coastal location makes it an ideal location for shorebirds, pelagic species, and an amazing assortment of rare birds. Nowhere else in Washington do all these habitats coexist together. Habitats include the open salt water, ocean beaches, tidal salt marshes, rock jetty, extensive mudflats, freshwater ponds, deciduous and coniferous woods, and open fields. Ocean Shores is a six-mile thin peninsula along the Washington coast, with a variety of habitats and a wide assortment of birds (over 300 species). ![]()
